On Friday 22 December 2013, at 4.30 pm, in the evocative spaces of ARCOS - Museum of Contemporary Art of Sannio in Benevento, the exhibition "Iside Contemporanea", curated by the artistic director Ferdinando Creta, will be inaugurated. The event, promoted by the Province of Benevento with the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, the Campania Region and the Benevento Chamber of Commerce, with the contribution of Liverini of Telese Terme and the Buonvento Shopping Center of Benevento, is supported by local sponsors who are now sensitive to the cultural solicitations of the Arcos Museum.
From the presence of the exhibition "Isis the scandalous and the magnificent", in the exhibition spaces of Arcos, the project of "Contemporary Isis" was born, a current response to the cult of the Divine Woman.
While the "ancient" exhibition displays sculptures from the Benevento sanctuary of Isis, the "contemporary" offers works by women who talk about women.
The dialogue between ancient and modern takes place with the works of contemporary artists from all over the national territory, who, starting from their cultural roots, charge their creations with that feminine energy that acts as a medium between the Isiac cult and that of contemporary women, beyond any provincialism. The question of "Italian provincialism continues to be at the center of a controversial controversy in our art criticism; Mario De Micheli, in unsuspecting years, already underlined that "Italian painting exists and we must learn, outside of any euphorically apologetic judgment and also of any unilateral distortion, to place it in the right perspective in the context of the situation of the time".
Isis, the female model par excellence in the ancient world, appears forcefully as a social model even today. The artists/women present at the exhibition stand out for their attention to the theme of femininity, the subject and object of artistic representation since ancient times. A collective of 33 young artists who, although with different works, subjects, techniques and compositions, respond in unison to the same call.
The woman in art initially associated with fertility, became synonymous with beauty and harmony with the Egyptians. The female figure of Isis anticipates what will be the canons of beauty that we find in the contemporary: scandalously magnificent woman and object of pleasure; with the Greeks, through the nude, we have the image of beauty in the modern sense; Roman art sees the woman as dignified with flowing dresses, while Byzantine art is refined and with very rich clothes. In the Middle Ages, women became hieratic and sacred, only to rediscover their bodily characteristics from the Renaissance onwards. The exhibition, therefore, is the synthesis of this woman who, starting from Isis, travels through history until arriving at today's condition of conflict.
On the occasion of the exhibition, a catalog will be published containing, in addition to an introductory text by Ferdinando Creta curator of the exhibition, the contributions of Paola Caruso, Patrizia Ada Fiorillo and Riccardo Lattuada, images of the works on display and the biography of the participating artists.
