The cyanotype is an ancient method of photographic printing characterized by the typical Prussian blue color (hence the name that derives from the ancient Greek kyanos, “blu”). Method discovered by the English scientist and astronomer Sir John Herschel in 1842, a few years after the launch of photography by William Fox Talbot in the UK and Louis Daguerre in France. IThe process developed by Herschel was based on some iron salts, namely potassium ferricyanide and ammoniacal ferric citrate. These two salts, mixed together, are very sensitive and react when placed in front of sunlight.
