Colored pencils on paper instead of chromatic paste on canvas. Yet the realistic effect is unsettling. Yes, because Cristina Iotti is one of the few Italian artists capable of raising a graphic technique to a true and proper tool of art, obtaining effects of extraordinary pictorialism even in the essential layout of her compositions, which mainly consist of one or two subjects, mainly portraits in the foreground or half-length.
Graphite and colored pencils are used with neo-Renaissance mastery and lenticular virtuosity, to outline the soul and reveal emotional nuances. Investigating the figure in the anatomical and physiognomic details as well as in the expressive ones, to operate a sort of psychological investigation (which brings me back to the portraits of Antonello Da Messina), to the point of revealing to us, from work to work, an exclusive geography of the female psyche
Even when they are portrayed from behind, the young women drawn by Iotti seem to invite us to follow them on their existential journey. Subtly and in a low voice. Standing out against backgrounds that seem to transpose them into a dimension of natural stillness: carpets of leaves, floral embroidery. An imaginary forest of dreams. The fairy forest.
