«As Anaïs Nin, an American writer, wrote, “Going to the moon isn't that far away. The furthest journey is the one within ourselves.” The search for one's own dimension, one's own spaces and therefore one's own identity is a fundamental and incessant part of every person.
In this collective where photography predominates, the artists were asked to reflect on everything that this research entails: feelings, borders, culture, knowledge, earth, walls, conflicts, love, solidarity, restlessness and disorientation. Only individualities can generate a collective identity, a European identity and it is from this point that this exhibition wants to start and who knows where we will end up, maybe on the moon." Visions of a restless identity
Can we say that a common identity exists? To what extent do myth and memory shape or consolidate our sense of collective belonging? And how does contemporary photography contribute to responding to the challenges and situations that European citizens experience?
Starting from the European Photography Theme 2023, I developed this project dedicated to the Berlin Wall. Remained in history and in the collective imagination as the symbol of the "border", the wall divided the city of Berlin for 28 years, from 13 August 1961 to 9 November 1989. I created 12 diptychs with the cyanotype technique, representing parts of the East Side Gallery, part of the wall now entirely painted with murals and graffiti by various artists relating to peace and the fall of the wall. I selected parts of murals that I had photographed on my trip to Berlin, transforming them into cyanotypes. I combined them, creating diptychs, with images of the sky, as a symbol of equality and absence of borders, the sky is the same for everyone...
I positioned them on thick canvases to further give the idea of the wall... and I titled them: "The sky above Berlin" in homage to Wim Wenders' film.
